Speaking at the valedictory session of the Bharat Innovates deep-tech pre-summit at IIT Bombay, Pradhan laid out a compelling vision for India’s technological leadership.
India’s Unique Tech Appeal
Minister Pradhan highlighted that Indian technology, particularly in areas like digital transactions, affordable healthcare, and generic medicines, is garnering international attention. He noted that the Global South often finds Western technology difficult to adopt and is increasingly looking towards India for suitable, scalable solutions. This presents a significant opportunity for India to convert its technological prowess into a public good, fostering greater collaboration between academia and industry.
The “India-Fast” Approach to Innovation
To realize this ambitious vision, Pradhan emphasized the need for an “India-Fast” approach. He identified academia, industry, the financial sector, and especially the youth as the key pillars to propel India into a major innovation and technology force. This integrated strategy aims to meet the escalating aspirations and demands of a rapidly growing economy while balancing civilizational knowledge with the innovative spirit of the younger generation.
Focus Areas for Deep-Tech Growth
The Minister stressed the critical role of research and innovation for sustained growth. He pointed out specific sectors that demand intensified efforts: waste management, biomass treatment, bio-medicine, and hydrogen. These areas not only hold the potential for significant societal impact but also align with global sustainability goals.
Bharat Innovates: Catalyzing the Ecosystem
Pradhan’s address underscored the importance of platforms like Bharat Innovates. This initiative, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a flagship program of the Ministry of Education, aims to institutionalize research and foster a robust startup ecosystem. He lauded the depth of innovation emerging from India’s startup landscape, particularly its focus on technology-led development, sustainability, and real-world impact. Such platforms are crucial for connecting innovative ideas with necessary investments, paving the way for scalable, future-ready enterprises.
A Glimpse into the Future: The Deep-Tech Pre-Summit
The recent two-day Bharat Innovates Deep-Tech Pre-Summit at IIT Bombay served as a testament to this vibrant ecosystem. The event successfully brought together over 200 startup founders, 70-plus investors, venture capital leaders, and 50-plus industry and government stakeholders. From over 3,000 applications nationwide, 137 promising deep-tech startups were selected to showcase their innovations. These spanned 13 critical technology domains including Advanced Computing, Healthcare & MedTech, Space & Defence, Energy & Sustainability, Semiconductors, Biotechnology, and Smart Cities & Mobility, among others.
A Roadmap to Global Leadership
The Bharat Innovates journey is mapped out across significant milestones, including national basecamps and culminating in an International Innovation Showcase in Nice, France, in June 2026. This comprehensive approach underscores India’s commitment to not only addressing domestic challenges but also establishing itself as a leading provider of deep-tech solutions on the global stage, especially for the Global South.
