Is the MAGA movement finding itself hoisted by its own petard? According to Kurt Bardella, a former GOP insider, the answer is a resounding yes, especially as Donald Trump increasingly shows “signs of old age.” Bardella, who previously served prominent Republican figures like Senator Olympia Snowe and Congressman Darrell Issa, recently shared his insights with The Guardian, drawing stark parallels between Trump’s current challenges and those he, and many Republicans, previously leveled against President Joe Biden.

In an article titled, “Trump attacks old foe Biden – but presidential parallels hard to avoid,” Bardella pointed out the uncanny similarities, particularly concerning age and the public perception of the economy. “It’s hard not to see the parallels both in terms of their age and how that manifests itself and certainly the condition of the economy,” Bardella observed.

He elaborated on Trump’s predicament, noting, “Trump has been cast in this role that Joe Biden had to play out and seemingly trying to use the same script, which is to convince people that you’re not feeling what you’re really feeling. It’s an unenviable political challenge.” This suggests a reversal of fortunes where Trump is now grappling with the same narrative pressures he once inflicted upon his opponent.

The discussion also touched on the historically sensitive issue of presidential health. Bardella, who has since switched his affiliation to the Democrats, delivered a potent message regarding accountability: “Donald Trump and Republicans are going to be held to the same standard that they set for Biden.”

He didn’t mince words, highlighting the undeniable hypocrisy. “You don’t get to challenge the media constantly and accuse the media of covering up Biden’s health and mental deterioration, and then turn around with someone who is certainly manifesting signs of old age and be bewildered that the same media that you ginned up and lectured and chastised and sued is now doing the same thing to you,” Bardella wrote in the piece. It’s a powerful reminder that the standards you set for others often become the yardstick by which you yourself are measured.

For the MAGA movement, Bardella’s observations suggest a self-inflicted wound, caught in a trap of their own making as their leader now faces the very scrutiny they championed against his predecessor.
